The building hosting our project, the old Hacienda of La Orduña was built to head the sugar cane business. Later on they had orange orchards and then coffee was planted and processed. The hacienda commanded more than six thousand hectars (about 14,400 acres) The City of Coatepec and its surroundings where part of this lordship.
The hacienda’s first registry dates from 1547 which makes it one of the region’s oldest historical, social and economic references. Important and famous individuals such as Maximiliano de Hasburgo, Gabriela Mistral, Ruben Darío, Carlos Fuentes and many others came to this hacienda. It was even featured in one of Carlos Fuentes’ novels.
Part of this property today includes the dismantled coffee processing plant and two old warehouses which are waiting to be restored and used as an educational theme park with a graphic art workshop for children.
The help we have received from the state and municipal governments as well as a number of private enthusiasts has enabled us to restore and make use of spaces in the building. The atmosphere these premises have to offer reclaims its historic solemnity and declares it ready to embrace engaged hard working initiatives evoking a passion for aesthetics. |
